No time for……

15 Dec

So much has been going on lately, that here I am in the middle of the night, writing.  This post has a strange title, but it sums up my feelings.  I have been itching to write this post for some time, but something else always took priority.  Whenever I would think of writing in my blog or doing one of my enjoyable hobbies, that familiar phrase “I haven’t time” kept coming to my mind.

I haven’t time.  Such a silly expression, really.  Every moment we are alive, time is the one thing we DO have!  It is just that I often want to do more than one thing in the moments.  I’ve been thinking about the concept of “being present in the moment”; meaning to really think about and experience whatever I’m doing at that time.  I feel I don’t do this nearly enough.  Seems like there is so many things going through my mind that often I miss enjoying and actually being in the moment.

Since October I have been busy with family.  Visiting and having them here.  Wonderful times together.  Something I value very much.  But, as always, when I’m busy with one thing, other things have to fall behind.  We can’t have or do everything.  And, if we could we wouldn’t value things as much.  I believe I value the special times so much, partly because they are special.

Back to this post’s title.  I do have time.  It is comforting to remind myself of that and realize the time I spend with my family is a choice.  I have decided that being with them is the most important thing for that time.  And, even tonight when I can’t sleep, I am choosing to write this post instead of lying here awake or playing a game on my iPad.  How I spend so many of my moments is the result of a choice.  I have time for what I choose to have time for.

So instead of regretting the things I haven’t been doing, I want to value those things that I have been experiencing.  I want  to consciously think about the choices I make, to know that I am doing what I am at present because it is what I choose to do with my time at this moment.  I want to value each moment for what it is.

Along with blogging my drawing has been on hold.  And I’m longing to get back to that also.  I have been taking pictures and clipping pics from the web–all the while thinking of how I can draw them.  I even talked to my little granddaughter about some of them the other day.  How I treasure these moments of sharing with those I love!

Well, two days have passed since I started this post.  I’ve had lots of different moments during that time, some good and some not so good.  But today I again visited with those close to me and value it–indeed more than anything else I might have done.  So it seems I am learning to value my moments.

My knitting is on the back burner at present.  I did talk to one granddaughter about making her another scarf for this winter.  She mentioned that her other one is too little.  So I hopefully I will remember to take my knitting with me on my next trip.  I really missed it on my last one.  Guess I packed to quickly.  I took my sketch books, but the situation wasn’t right for that.  It would have been right for knitting, but I had forgot it.  That’s just how life goes sometimes.  At least for me.

The other night (before I started writing this post) I stumbled onto a blog about drawing  www.starrpoint.blogspot.com.  The first article I found was about drawing snow in the winter landscape.  I have really been drawn to winter scenes lately.  I liked the post so much that I skimmed though others.  In the archives I read the first post.  It is a poem about finally calling herself an artist.  Just a name for something she has been all along.  I really appreciated the poem.  So I now I wonder, since I have such a need to write and so enjoy writing this blog, does that make me a writer?  Like the artist felt, the title seems too big or important for what I’m doing.  But, maybe???   Kind of thrilling to even think of having such a title, that maybe I could be a writer!

Meanderings

15 Nov

Today I want to write a post, but not really sure yet what it will be.  Sometimes when I write I have a specific subject in mind.  But not today.  Today I just want to write.  I guess it must be a creative thing.

I remember in college ‘creative writing’ was mentioned.  I really don’t remember what that was, just remember the phrase.  So I checked Wikipedia.  After glancing at it, it decided I will just leave it a leftover phrase in my mind.  It went into much more detail than I want.

So, today I’m just meandering.  It seems strange that I have such a need to write when I really have nothing to say, but that’s just how it is.

Most of the trees have lost their leaves here, except some of the oaks that tend to hold onto them.  Further south there are still lots of leaves, colors fading but still pretty.  I love the fall.  I remember a book I used to read to the children about 4 puppies that grew through the season.  It told of the changing seasons and how the puppies grew.  For fall, I remember the phrase “leaves crisp as cornflakes covered the ground”.  It also told of a brisk wind.  So many times when I go out in the leaves I think of that story.

I love the look of winter, but the older I get the less I enjoy the cold.  I have thought about going south, but aside from the cost, I think I would miss the season.  I do love seeing the snow, playing in it, and even enjoy shoveling.  Reflecting on it I realize that I expect to be cold when I go out in winter.  It’s the being cold inside the house I don’t like.

Part of the problem is I don’t want to spend so much for heat.  I know that if I covered the windows with heaver drapes or shades it would be warmer.  But I love looking out at the stars.  I even like looking out from different rooms when I wake up in the night.  So, as in most things, I realize it is a trade off.  At present I have chosen to dress more warmly, covering myself with a throw while I’m sitting and enjoy the outside view.

As I sit here I see the wall beside my piano.  I wish, as I often do, that I was good at building things, like my daughter.  Then I would put up some floating shelves to hold my music.  I might even have room for a hanging guitar stand.  I get many ideas, but mostly they just remain ideas.

I like my house, and especially so with the remodeling that my daughter has done for me.  I always have more projects.  But in a way it is good that she doesn’t get at them quickly.  Cause I often change my mind after thinking about it for awhile.

At present we have cut an opening in the wall between the living room and kitchen.  That really helped the kitchen feel more a part of the house and a much more spacious room.  She removed a pantry and I put a new fridge where it had been.  She then built a new, smaller pantry on the other side of the opening.  I’ve removed some of my upper cabinet doors.  I like that look.  Also repainted them.  I love the little recessed pantry she put in one wall.  It is just the right size for my spices and quart jars of beans and grains.  Is’t amazing how much I can get in there.  She was able to use the doors from the old pantry for the both the new one and the recessed one.

Now I’m thinking of  having her add another double door recessed one under the opening.  I could use the doors that were on the upper cabinets.  We still have to make a shelf extending over stove and to upper cabinet over fridge.  But for that one I need to wait until I get another microwave.

I love my present microwave–it is a Sharp.  I think it is a convection micro.  It bakes, broils, and toasts as well as microwaves.  I don’t use the broil or toast much but use the bake all the time.  The only time I use my range oven is when someone comes and we bake a large amount.  However, it has a few drawbacks.  It is getting old and takes a lot longer to cool down.  The wattage is lower than the newer convection micros I’ve checked out.  Also it takes up counter space and I don’t have a lot.

After the range exhaust fan and light quit I started looking for a replacement.  I like the micro-hood my daughter has.  As I looked, I found convection micro-hoods.  I have almost decided on a GE one.  The local Sears store had carried one, but I didn’t see it the last time I was there.  They are still on the website.  So as soon as I save up some money I hope to get one.  With the micro-hood and the recessed pantry and shelf, my kitchen remodel will be finished.

That probably won’t be until after the first of the year, because I need a camera right now, so that takes priority in the money department.  Also I tend to take trips in the fall and early winter.  Although there are always trade-offs, I love having the options.  I even love planning ahead and deciding which projects I want the most.  How boring life would be if we had all the money in the world and didn’t have to plan and choose!

As I said, I love my house.  Sitting here in my living room, covered with a throw, laptop on my lap, I can see out the windows of four different room.  I love this open feeling.  But strangely enough, my house lot is nestled with woods around.  I like that too.  I have small open areas, but the woods around give me a safe, comfortable feeling.

Just now out my living room window to the left, I see a mockingbird in my magnolia tree.  Beyond is the road, with the woods on the other edge, continuing down the hill.  Traffic goes by, but I’m snug in my own little world.  Looking right, through the dining room sliding doors I see my deck, open lawn, with woods to back.  I have an old apple tree in the corner just this side of the woods.  Behind me, beyond the carport are my woods.  (The woods on all the other sides belong to others.)  Ahead of me to the right I can see the trees beyond my bedroom window.   I can see through  into my kitchen, another window, but that view is just of the house siding where the laundry area juts out.  I do like to see plants on that windowsill, the sun catchers in the window and the wine glasses overhead framing the window.

Just now, after previewing this post i realized that I should add pics of my remodeling.  Then I had a better idea.  I will change photo page to the title of Featured Photos.  I will add categories.  One will be remodeling.  I;ll probably have another be garden.  I can always add other categories as the need arises.  That way all the photos will be in one place.  I’m not really good yet at inserting photos into my posts anyway.  I’ll be adding the photos soon.

Well, I have meandered quite a bit today.   Just a walk through my scattered mind   Looks like I’m going to have to put this post in more than one category.  And I must remember to add the tags.

My Art page

8 Nov

Well, after establishing a Facebook page, I’ve finally created a page on this blog titled My Art.  (You will see it at the top right.)  I now have a drop-down menu to separate categories.  These pages are where I will be posting pics of my drawings, paintings, and other artwork.  I have a few posted at present.  After I get a better camera I will be posting more.

I’m hoping the art page will encourage me to actually DO more drawings.  I was doing really well as long as I was taking the lessons, but lately I have hardly drawn anything.  So I’m aiming at posting at least two new drawings a month.  That is in addition to the ones I have already completed but not yet posted.

I appreciate all the Facebook comments I’ve received.  All comments encourage me to keep on.  I’m also pleased that the number of people who follow my blog has increased.

Artwork on Facebook page

5 Nov

Since I have been focusing on my blog layout, I still haven’t taken the time to learn how to place photos of my artwork on a page.  There is so much to learn regarding size, placement, etc.

Today when I was asking one of my daughter-in-laws about the widget link to a Facebook page, she showed me how to set up a page and post photos.  That is an easier method than trying to post them to a page on this blog.  So, at least for now, please follow my link to my Facebook page to see the artwork.  I have two pics now, one the mask I donated to www.facesunmasked.org and another that I made into a birthday card.  I hope to get more posted this month.

As always I love your comments.  Do you like my blog’s new look?  Any suggestions on how to improve it?  What are your feelings about my art on my Facebook page?

Customizing blog apprearance

4 Nov

As you can see, I’m still working on the look of my blog. I just didn’t care for some of the Sight theme format, so I changed back to the Bueno theme.

In all my playing around with themes I found out how to add widgets, customize themes, font, color, and many other useful stuff.  I’ve learned that the different themes have different built in atributes, many which can be customized.  I changed back to Bueno promarily because I like way it displays my posts–the entire new post, followed by the other recent posts.  I prefer it to the Sight method of displaying only a portion of each post.  When I changed back to Bueno I was also able to spell out my full title with the tagline appearing above instead of behind the title.

I’ve found out the there are different places on my dashboard where I can change different things.  For instance, there is a Header tab under Appearance, which seemed to me the logical place to resize the title.  But it isn’t.  I had to choose Custom Design under Appearance.  From there I could change the font–which is how I changed the size–and the color of the title.  However, I had to go to Settings, General to change the spelling of the title.  The Header tab is where I can change the title color.   The Background (under Apprearance) is where, experimenting to find out what it did, I produced the green color.  I also choose gray for something, but can’t remember what or the tab from where I changed it.  I haven’t noticed any gray on the post, so maybe it was something I changed back again.  Images can also be added both in background and in headers, but I haven’t experimented enough with images yet.

I really haven’t decided whether to keep the current color scheme or not.  Once I got the title size and color changed, Bueno was still displaying the dates and the search box in red, which didn’t go at all with the purple title.  So I again experimented changing colors.  This is what I currently came up with.  The green is a little bright, but it is eye catchig and goes well with purple.    I’m still expermenting with different fonts for the title.

I’ve tried learning some from Support and the Forums, but mostly I have just experiemtned.  It anoys me that I still haven’t learned how to preview the public view of my blog from the dashboard.  When I make some changes it lets me preview, but not others.  It is very frustrating to have to log back in to the site just to see a change.  I know it surely must be possible to view from the dashboard, but I haven’t found it yet.  I’m glad that I have found out how to preview posts before publishing them, So much of this blog is a learning work in pogress!

More tweeks

24 Oct

Well, as you can see,, I’m still fine tuning my blog  After I changed the title to my domain name <learning2leftovers> I had a problem with the title overlapping the description tagline and the search box.  I tried various things but nothing seemed to work.

That caused me to search out other themes.  WordPress has LOTS of themes.  I did the demos on ones that caught my eye.  But after checking out all the features I found I like my present theme “Sight” best.

So after trying variations of my title, I came up with one that makes m blog title, description tagline and search box all fit without overlapping.   I would prefer to not use the shortened title, but I certainly like it better than the overlapping I had.

All in all I’m pleased with my new look.  Let me know what you think.

Working out the bugs

23 Oct

As you can see, I’ve changed my blog theme.  But it isn’t quite like I want yet.  I don’t like the description of my blog placed behind the blog title.  I would much rather have it located under the title.  It’s really distracting as it is.  So I’m trying to fix that, but no luck yet.  One help topic I opened suggested a Custom Design.  Unfortunately that requires I know html or CSS.  I don’t know either.  But since that is the only topic I’ve found so far that addresses the issue, I’ve started a htm tutorial.  Wonder how long that will take me?

I just discovered one really strange thing.  When I preview this post using my laptop my description tagline is displayed as the above paragraph describes.  But when I logged on with my iPad it is displayed under my blog title.  I’ll have to check it out once I log out then just go to site as a reader, not signed in.  If the description  is under the title, then I will have to decide if I still want to learn html.

Another thing I haven’t yet figured out is how to add the selection tabs across the top of the page under my title.  The theme demo showed seven tabs, but only two are presently displayed on my blog–Home and About.  However, the reader can click on a topic in the Category section in the box to the right to access posts in that particular category.  I just wish I could put them at the top of the page.  One difficulty I’m finding  is that I’ve yet to learn what these tabs are called.  It seems the success of any search is to enter the correct word.  I seem to find things by much trial and error.  As I preview this post before publishing it, I’m wondering if the tabs across the top are Pages.  I will have to check that out.

I have addressed these issues in the WordPress forum.  Hopefully I will get some help there.  If any of you reading this has the answers, please let me know.

I still need to place a blog photo under under my title.  Since I’m interested in so many different things which this blog covers, I’m having some difficulty in selecting one.  .Maybe I need to make a collage and take a picture of that! (If I knew how to add a smile symbol, it would be here.)

Otherwise, I’m pleased with the new theme.   I have been successful changing several things to customize the page.  One is the color scheme–I love the title in purple (my favorite color).  I’m glad, too,  I was able to change my title to match my domain name.  I’m also pleased that I found out how to add the Widget where readers can follow my blog via email.   And I like the Category header above each post title.  I think the search box in also a good addition.  I’m not sure yet if the comment tab is best at the top or the bottom of the post.  I guess I will try it at the top and see how it goes.  What do you readers think?

Well, at least changing my blog theme is keeping me busy.  It’s really a good thing I enjoy learning new things or I would really be frustrated.  I realize more and more as time goes on that blogging is as much a learning experience as the things I’m writing about.  But for the most part I do enjoy it.  I just have to keep working out the bugs.  I just hope this work in process blog won’t be too frustrating for my readers.

Wish me luck!

23 Oct

Well, I’ve now got all the posts renamed and re-categorized.  Also, have the categories more condensed.  So now I’m ready to change the theme.  My heart is racing, but I’m going to do it.

I know it will still take me a while to reformat the new theme, so please bear with me.  As always, please comment.  Although I really do love writing this blog, your comments along with the stats really encourage me to keep  going.

Changing blog theme

20 Oct

There is so much to learn about so many things!  Nearly always when  I want to do something new or change things, I find I have to learn how.  Take this blog.  I do want to get my artwork published, but need to learn more about posting pics.  And I’m not really satisfied with the appearance of my blog.  So I must choose which to learn first.  After thinking about it awhile, I decided to change the appearance first.  Then after I have it set up the way I want  I can post the pics.

In searching WordPress support, I’ve learned that to change the blog appearance I need to select a different theme.  I’ve found one that seems to be more what I want.  And supposedly I won’t lose any content in the change.   I’ve read about how to do the change.  But, the idea of changing it is still a bit scary .  Just starting a blog was a big step, and now I’m wanting to change it!   Yet, nothing ventured is nothing learned.

I believe the first thing I need to do is  to make parent categories, more like the titles that I presently have on my posts.  I hope to have these categories displayed across the top of the blog.  This will make it easier for my readers to find specific content.  (I still need to learn more about the difference between Categories and Tags.  I think I have been using them interchangeable and they really aren’t  the same thing.)   I will need to delete or make subs of some of my Categories.

Next I will need to change the titles on all my posts, making them all different.  I will also need to put the post in the correct new category.  This should make it possible to select a specific post from a specific category. Then I will need to double check to see if the posts are in the correct categories

When I have all the current content with new titles and correctly categorized,  I will need to select the new theme.  Then it will be a matter of moving things around and getting the page to work as I want it to.

You can see this is a big undertaking for me.  And it will take me some time.   So if you happen to visit during this time of change, don”t be surprised if things seem a bit jumbled.  I will get it fixed.   And hopefully it will be a much improved blog.  Wish me luck!

Back online

16 Oct

Well, I’m finally back online.  After several frustrating weeks and trying various things, I determined that I needed a new router.  Which lead to internet search and shopping expedition to find the best value.  I tend to do that with almost everything–I want the best value for my money.  I ended up getting one from Amazon.

If I could, I would order everything online–I never have enjoyed shopping.  Except in a yarn store.  There I love to feel and see the different colors and blends.  Also a bakery where I can smell the breads.  I guess I am a very sensetory (I know that’s not really a word) person.  I seem to see beyond the obvious.  Sometimes I don’t even notice the obvious, instead my focus is on something else.  And when I listen to people speak, I hear the nuance as much as the words.  I’m not content just to look at or even have pretty flowers.  I need to touch them, smell them, and sometimes even to taste.  My kids could tell you about the flowers I used to put in salads, or the candied rose petals and violets.

One strange thing about me is that although I enjoy different tastes, I can eat just about anything.  Sometimes I concoct weird dishes.  When my kids were little I always insisted that they at least try everything. One bite can’t hurt.  Well, this backfired on me at my son’s recently.  He, too,  loves to experiment making different things.  But unlike me, he is very scientific in his methods and tracks each new venture.  He had made some egss–he told me about the method but I don’t remember what it is called.  (I probably wasn’t paying enough attention to his words.)  He uses a thermometer in the water and they are cooked for a long time.  Anyway, he had used this method and served the egg over toast.  The yolk was solid and stood up, but the white was very runny.  It looked pretty, but I like my eggs hard and just didn’t know if I could eat it.  So I ask if I could cook mine some more.  Did I ever hear it!  Both my sons were like “NO, mom, you have to ate least taste it  One bite won’t hurt you.  You have at least eat one bite.”  Well, I had to laugh with them, but I must admit I was one of the hardest bites I ever got down!  They were so surprised, cause they thought I could eat anything.  So I had to tell them that, even I, have some drawbacks.  One is runny eggs and the other is finding bones or eggshells in my food.   Whenever that occurs I find it very hard to get the food down, and to keep down what I’ve already eaten.

Last week my daughter and I did some masks for Faces.  See www.facesunmasked.org  We had fun making the masks and it is for a good cause. My effort at philanthropy .  I like the Wikipedia definition <philanthropy— the “love of what it is to be human”>   As soon as I have some time I will post the pics of the masks as well as ones of my drawings.  I, also, hope to get a post out soon about food and my eating healthy venture.

Back to the sensetory word.  I typed it in a web page just to see what came up.  Spelled either sensetory or sensitory it isn’t a word.  But I did find a Sensatori Resort Crete.  It is a sport type hands on resort–which I’m sure is way out of my price range.  It claims to bring you everything from sports to spa treatments with a touch of classic Creek style.  There are 4 restaurants, a main one with buffets, a Greek, a Tex-Mex and a Thai.  It sounds like a great place!

When I read their menus and often when I read of restaurant offerings for different types of food, I want to try to make them at home.  So I have lots of different spices and seasonings.  I enjoy experimenting, well really I probably like the experimenting, the trying as much as the taste of the finished product.  Sometime I enjoy the process much more than the product–as in the old world cheese venture!

That seems to be all that I have today.  Hopefully I can get another post soon.  Thanks for all of your comments and keep them coming.
